Hello Neighbor! Creating A Hydroponic Garden in Shapira

– VOL. 10

Our “Hello Neighbor!” series is an ongoing collection of short stories from the heart of our neighborhoods and the people who make them home.

As told by Itay in Tel Aviv

I’m a biologist, and an aquaculture scientist, and one thing I’m particularly interested in is hydroponics. I was thinking about how I might start to build systems on my own. I had some prior experience in building hydroponic systems, but I really wanted someone to provide some feedback on some designs I had in mind.

One day, I met Liran while having lunch with several other Venn members in the Venn Cowork in Shapira. We discovered we share several common interests in science, technology, design, and innovation. We quickly became good friends and began discussing new ideas and sharing thoughts on a daily basis.

It turns out that he was also interested in hydroponics, so we started sharing information from time to time about new things we read or heard about the topic. It wasn’t long before Liran and I thought, “Hey, what if we started a hydroponic garden together?!” We decided the first system we would build will be for our workspace.

It’s been several months since we started our hydroponic garden and we’ve learned a lot from this experience. For now the system is still running, but results are not amazing. We will keep it running while we plan our Hydroponic System 2.0.

Our next project will start in Spring 2022, and we will implement the lessons learned from our first attempt. For now, it is hard to say if this is a future business or just a hobby. Either way, it’s time well spent.

If Liran and I had never met that day, I don’t think we would have created this garden on our own. It has been such a rewarding experience to turn what was once just a passion into a project that can benefit the local community.
